Your check engine light, without the panic

It's the most ignored and most misunderstood light on the dash. Here's how to read it.

Solid vs. flashing

A steady check engine light usually means something needs attention but isn't an emergency — you can typically drive to a shop. A flashing light is more serious: it often signals an active misfire that can damage your catalytic converter. If it's flashing, ease off and get it checked promptly.

Either way, the light means the car stored a trouble code. Reading that code is step one — many auto-parts stores will scan it for free.

What to do first

Before spending anything, get the code. Then look it up so you walk into the shop already knowing roughly what's wrong and what it should cost. That single step is the difference between being quoted fairly and being taken advantage of.
